35,000 Point Amex SPG Credit Card Offer
This is post is a little out of the ordinary for me, a credit card recommendation! I normally don’t get too thrilled about credit card offers (that’s Jay’s territory), but this one is going to provide huge savings on a future vacation, so I wanted to share the news since I’m sure some of you love free vacations too!
In case you weren’t aware, Starwood and American Express have partnered together to offer a credit card that gives you 35,000 Starwood points for signing up. This offer is only available until March 30, 2016 (after this date the offer drops to 25,000 points). The only requirement is that you spend $3,000 in the first three months…pretty easy to accomplish, even for a spendthrift like me : ) I’ll put all of our regular expenses on this card for the next three months plus maybe a few extra shopping trips or Stitch Fix orders…what a burden!
In addition to the points, you receive the following benefits:
- No foreign transactions fees
- Free Boingo wireless access
- Premium internet access at Starwood hotels
- 2 points per $1 spent at Starwood hotels
Now, on to the fun part – what you can do with those 35,000 Starwood points!! We are planning a trip to San Francisco in the fall and were previously not looking forward to paying around $300 a night for hotels in the downtown area. Luckily, this card will allow us to stay for free!
Let’s take a look at the math (the accountant in me loves this part):
- 5 nights at the Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf Hotel in downtown San Francisco
Regular Cost: $383 (with taxes) per night. Total – $1,915
Points Cost: 12,000 per night (5th night free). Total – 48,000 points
Since Jay and I are both getting this card, we can easily cover the cost of 5 nights and have 22,000 points left over.
Most likely you’ll only be getting one card, so here are a few options within the 35,000 point range!
- New York City – Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel
3 nights for 36,000 points (easily achievable using the 1 point per $1 earned for regular purchases)
Savings: $1,257
- Walt Disney World – Dolphin Resort
3 nights for 30,000 points
Savings: $835
- Beijing – The Great Wall Sheraton Hotel
13 (!!) nights for 33,000 points
Savings: $1,565
