Mini Book Reviews – May 2024

Physical Books:

the rule book

The Rule Book

by Sarah Adams

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2024, so I was thrilled to snag it from the New Books section at my library one week! Sarah Adams brings us another sports romance featuring a football star and his agent / former flame. Derek is on the cusp of returning after an injury and finds out his new agent is the woman who destroyed his heart in college.

They create a set of rules to keep things professional but one wild night in Vegas throws everything in disarray. Now they’re forced to play pretend husband and wife and are both realizing the feelings from college haven’t gone away…at all. Nora is an absolute delight of a character – wildly quirky and bursting with joy but also full of ambition and grit. I loved that she didn’t change her personality to fit into the world of sports agents and instead made it work for her.

The buildup between her and Derek was also delicious!! So. Much. Tension!! These two were so easy to root for and clearly grew into people that deserved each other – showcasing all the best ways to support your partner and show them love. SWOON!!  | 5 Stars | Buy From Amazon | Buy From Target

how to plot a payback

How To Plot A Payback

by Melissa Ferguson

How To Plot A Payback is perfect for anyone who loves stories set in Hollywood or wants a behind the scenes peek at script writing / filming a TV show! A Hollywood star and the new script writer end up unlikely frenemies – he detests her but she is full of sunshine and befriends him to try to make his life better.

While I still love Meet Me In The Margins the absolute most by Melissa, this was a cute star studded romance that you’ll love if you want a grumpy/sunshine mix and a dose of celebrity!!!  | 3.5 Stars | Buy From Amazon | Buy From Target

As always, I recommend using Libro.fm if you’re an audiobook listener!! Libro.fm directly supports indie bookstores, but costs the same as Amazon’s Audible! You can get THREE audiobooks for only $15 with my link and code CHOOSEINDIE.

funny story

Funny Story

by Emily Henry

When I heard Julia Whalen was narrating Emily Henry’s newest release, I knew I had to grab the audiobook! She does a phenomenal job telling the story of two people jilted by their exes and forced to move in together.

Daphne and Miles find themselves stranded when their exes declare their love for each other, so they end up wallowing together and trying to move forward. When a wedding invite shows up, they decide to pretend their dating to show just how “over” their exes they are.

Although Emily Henry isn’t my absolute favorite romance author, this was higher up on my ranking of her books! It’s a cute story and I enjoyed the development of Daphne and Miles’ true feelings. 4 Stars | Buy On Amazon | Buy From Target | Listen on Libro.fm (Get 2 FREE Audiobooks When You Try A Membership!)

Heartless Hunter

by Kristen Ciccarelli

I’d heard great things about this, but was not expecting to devour it in 2 days!! This is the romantasy book I needed after my Fourth Wing and Throne of Glass hangovers. A thrilling game of cat and mouse between a witch and the man known for ruthlessly hunting her kind. I cannot wait for the next book in the series so I can dive back into this world.

Since her world changed forever, Rune has desperately hid her true nature and devoted her life to saving fellow witches before they are discovered and murdered. She covers her tracks by acting as ditzy socialite and senses an opportunity to gain information by wooing the worst witch hunter of all.

Gideon also realizes there might be an advantage to getting to know Rune and they both play a dangerous game as they spend time together.  | 5 Stars | Free on Kindle Unlimited! | Buy From Amazon

house of glass

House of Glass

by Sarah Pekkanen

One of the best thrillers I’ve read so far in 2024! House of Glass was equal parts creepy and intriguing! I was tossing and turning trying to figure out what was really going on with this eerie mansion and suspicious family.

Stella’s services as a Best Interest Lawyer are required for the contentious divorce between Beth and Ian while they’re fighting for custody of their daughter. The family was traumatized after their nanny fell (or was pushed?) from their house and died. Everyone was under suspicion but the case went cold, leaving only a broken up family and the daughter losing her ability to speak due to the trauma.

As Stella slowly uncovers the secrets the family is hiding, she can’t deny there’s a trickle of evil woven throughout the house and Rose may be the source. Sarah Pekkanen did a phenomenal job turning a seemingly straightforward case into a hairs standing up on the back of your neck thriller.  | 4.5 Stars | Buy From Amazon | Buy From Target
