Best Fantasy Duologys
Let’s be honest, sometimes you just don’t have the energy for a seven-book fantasy series that takes over your life (and your bookshelf). That’s where duologies come in! I’ve been loving this trend in publishing and am hoping to see even more options in the future!
Two books, one epic story, and zero commitment issues. This book list features my recommendations for fantasy duos that give you all the feels without dragging things out.

Best Fantasy Duologies
Heartless Hunter / Rebel Witch
I devoured the first book in this duology in 2 days!! The series is about a thrilling game of cat and mouse between a witch and the man known for ruthlessly hunting her kind. In Heartless Hunter, we meet Rune, who’s world was changed forever when a revolution against the witches in power resulted in her kind being hunted down and killed.
Since then, Rune has desperately hid her true status as a witch and devoted her life to saving fellow witches before they are discovered. She covers her tracks by acting as ditzy socialite and senses an opportunity to gain information by wooing the worst witch hunter of all. Gideon also realizes there might be an advantage to getting to know Rune and they both play a dangerous game as they spend time together.
The second book picks up after an insane cliffhanger and takes us on a journey as Rune and Gideon switch back and forth between plotting against each other and trying to trust each other. Their paths are fraught with peril and they have decide if they’ll survive without each other or figure out a way to work together. | Free on Kindle Unlimited! | Buy From Amazon
One Dark Window / Two Twisted Crowns
If you’re looking for a fantasy duology with a more gothic vibe and an incredibly unique magic system, this is the one for you! Plus, there is an incredible new deluxe edition of these books coming out soon!
In One Dark Window, we journey to the land of Blunder where magic is alive and well for those who possess different Providence cards. Each of the 12 cards allows the user to access a different skill, from strength to invisibility to mind control. But the kingdom is under threat from the mist of the woods that keeps spreading and infecting those who are not protected with a darker, dangerous magic.
Elspeth was infected as a girl but has kept the secret of the Nightmare in her head her entire life. When she reluctantly agrees to help a group of “traitors” unite the deck of cards and attempt to rid the land of the mist, she begins to learn more about the consequences of the presence in her mind and his connection to this land than she ever imagined.
I adore that magic comes with a severe cost in this fantasy, constantly forcing the users to weigh the cost against the benefit. Elspeth and Ravyn are two fantastic characters, each with their own unique motivations to unite the deck. I just finished the sequel and loved how the story refocuses on two side characters from Book 1. This shift shows us a different perspective, and potential love match, but still keeps Elspeth and Ravyn around. Ultimately, I was so satisfied with how the story tied together and wrapped up! 4.5 Stars | Buy New Deluxe Edition From Amazon | Buy From Target
A Fate Forged in Fire / TBD
Since A Fate Forged in Fire was just released in 2025, we don’t yet know the name of Book 2. However, it is confirmed to be a duology! This is the fantasy duology for you if you want Celtic inspiration and dragons!!
To become the first queen in centuries, a powerfully blessed blacksmith must use her wits and fire magic to overthrow the corrupt powers ruling her kingdom—while also fighting her growing desire for one of her dragon-riding adversaries. Once a territory built on matriarchal rule and values, Tìr Teine has since grown frail from a long line of fruitless kings, the most recent of which have ruled under the influence of the True Religion, an oppressive group who have steadily poisoned the region with their anti-magic teachings.
Born to rule and blessed by fire, Aemyra has begrudgingly lived in hiding rather than risk her life in court, waiting in anticipation for the current king’s death so she can bond to his dragon, claim her throne, and protect her people. But when the king dies and Aemyra is ready to take what is rightfully hers, her ambitious plan is foiled, and she is thrust into a game of vicious politics and plots.
Her biggest adversary is Prince Fiorean, a dragon rider and one of the most powerful fire wielders in the territory. Cold, arrogant, and blindly supportive of his corrupt family, he is everything Aemyra despises. But as chaos engulfs the court, they find themselves reluctantly entwined, forced to forge an uneasy alliance—one that quickly ignites into something more dangerous than either of them expected. Behind enemy lines and slowly falling for her so-called adversary, Aemyra uncovers just how far the rot of corruption has spread, and what she may have to sacrifice to claim her throne.
Book 1 left us with a few unexpected turns, so I cannot wait to see what happens in the finale! | Buy From Amazon | Buy From Target
Divine Rivals / Ruthless Vows
This romantasy with a World War 1 setting took the book world by storm! It’s a slow burn between a woman and her mysterious connection with a man on the other side of a magical typewriter. The story centers on 18‑year‑old Iris Winnow, a journalist supporting her struggling family after her brother Forest marches off to war and their mother spirals into alcoholism. While competing with fellow Gazette reporter Roman Kitt for a coveted columnist position, Iris channels her anxiety into letters she writes to her missing brother. But the magical typewriter she inherited sends these letters to Roman, who responds under the alias “Carver.” Their anonymous correspondence blossoms into a deep emotional connection—even as their rivalry intensifies at work
When tragedy strikes—first the death of Iris’s mother, then Forest’s uncertain fate—Iris abandons the Gazette and becomes a war correspondent, determined to uncover the truth. Roman follows her to the front lines, secretly continuing his role as Carver and ultimately revealing his dual identity in the trenches. They fall in love amidst brutal warfare and supernatural chaos, marry, and resolve to stay together. But the novel ends on a dramatic cliffhanger: during a poisonous gas attack, Iris is separated—rescued by Forest—while Roman disappears, leaving their future uncertain and setting the stage for the sequel.
Book 2 picks up with our lovebirds separated from each other, in less than ideal circumstances. I still have to read the conclusion but I’ve heard rave reviews that it’s just as enthralling as the first book! | Buy From Amazon | Buy From Target
Six of Crows / Crooked Kingdom
This is such a popular fantasy duology that you can actually get a special boxed set featuring these two books – and it’s currently only $17! Leigh Bardugo is a renowned fantasy writer, so this is high on my list to read soon! These books were originally published almost a decade ago but are still widely regarded as some of the best out there.
Taking place within the Grishaverse created by Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows introduces readers to a new cast of characters. Criminal mastermind Kaz Brekker is offered a chance at the heist of a lifetime, one so dangerous that success could net him a fortune beyond imagination. To pull this off, he assembles a ragtag crew of six individuals, each with unique skills and painful pasts: a revenge‑driven convict; Jesper, a sharpshooter with a gambling addiction; Wylan, a privileged runaway; Inej, the silent spy known as the Wraith; Nina, a Heartrender who uses her Grisha magic to survive the slums; and Matthias, a former soldier entangled in conflicting loyalties.
Together, they race against time to break into the impenetrable Ice Court and retrieve a hostage. But tensions run high as internal conflicts and romantic trysts threaten to undermine the mission. These books are known for their witty dialogue, page turning action, and character development. I can’t wait to dive in! | Buy Boxed Set From Amazon
We Hunt The Flame / We Free The Stars
In a lush, Arabian-inspired realm called Arawiya, magic has vanished and a deadly forest known as the Arz creeps ever closer, swallowing land and hope. Zafira, a skilled hunter, disguises herself as a man to venture into the Arz and provide food for her people—knowing full well that revealing her true identity would mean rejection and danger. Meanwhile, Nasir—the infamous “Prince of Death”—carries out ruthless assassinations by his father’s command. Although legend surrounds both Zafira and Nasir, neither desires the notoriety that defines them.
When a mysterious artifact—the Jarawada, capable of restoring magic—is discovered, Zafira embarks on a quest to reclaim it and save her world. At the same time, Nasir is tasked by his father to secure the artifact—and eliminate the legendary hunter he believes is pursuing it. As their paths collide, an ancient evil begins to stir. What initially appears to be a mission-born rivalry deepens into uneasy alliance, as both must overcome personal and cultural constraints—and perhaps discover in each other the will to challenge fate itself. | Buy From Amazon for less than $8
Fable / Namesake
I’m going to be honest, one of my favorite aspects of this fantasy duology is the cover design!! Fable and Namesake beautifully come together to form a portrait of our main character. Plus, this series has more of a pirate vibe, which sets it apart from other typical fantasy series.
Seventeen‑year‑old Fable, daughter of a powerful trader in the Narrows, has survived four years abandoned on the perilous island of Jeval after her mother drowned and her father, Saint, left her there. She earns a living dredging for rare gems and dreams of reclaiming her rightful place beside her father’s crew. When she finally amasses enough to secure passage off the island, she joins the Marigold—helmed by the enigmatic West—aiming to confront her father and claim her inheritance.
Aboard the Marigold, Fable slowly earns the trust of its tight‑knit crew—Willa, Hamish, Paj, and Auster—and finds herself entangled in dangerous sea voyages, rivalries, and hidden agendas. Tensions rise as she conceals her identity while forging bonds with West, whose calm exterior hides deeper feelings. The book builds toward a dramatic climax with a daring underwater gem heist, confessions of fledgling love, and a shocking cliffhanger when foes converge and long‑buried secrets threaten to surface
If you love the world building and want even more from this story, you can also read Saint, which is a prequel about Fable’s father. This cover is simply stunning as well! | Buy From Amazon | Buy From Target
