What I’m Loving Lately – October 2017
Pumpkins everywhere! I adore the changing of the seasons and decorations that show up this time of year. Plus, it’s the start of a blissful three months jumping from Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas. Our October was fairly calm with a few fun fall activities thrown in! As usual, I’m also linking up with Leigh Kramer to share my monthly highlights.
TV Shows
Sherlock – With the upcoming price increase, Jay and I are jumping ship from Netflix. We know we only have a month or two before we cancel our subscription, so I’m trying to fit in all the shows I want to see. I just realized Season 4 of Sherlock is available, so that’s on the top of my list! Ok – update: I watched the first episode after writing that bit and now I very angry with the start of this season!!!
Atypical – Another Netflix show that I binge watched in less than a week. This comedy/drama focuses on a teen with autism and his interactions with his family, therapist, and classmates. The writing isn’t amazing, but the actor who plays Sam is captivating and I found myself completely engaged with the family’s story.
Movies
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight – We’ve both seen these a few times, but I think they’re always worth rewatching. The Dark Knight is my favorite of the trilogy (Heath Ledger! Amazing). I’m sure we’ll get around to the third movie eventually, but we have a tendency to start things and not finish them haha.
Mean Girls – This was only my second time watching this movie! Jay actually introduced it to me for the first time a few years ago. It’s just hilarious and the perfect, quick comedy to watch on a weeknight.

Events/Activities
Lehigh Valley Zoo – In mid-October we took Jay’s mom and younger brother to the Boo at the Zoo event. His brother dressed up as someone from Star Wars (don’t ask me who) and trick or treated throughout the zoo. We had so much fun watching the animals play and enjoying the beautiful weather.
Lehigh Valley Phantoms Game – Once again I received free tickets to a Phantoms hockey game through my work. Our seats were 9 rows from the ice and the Phantoms won! It’s such a great night out – I can’t wait to go to more games this season.
Stitch Fix – This definitely counts as a big event in my eyes. I love the thrill of receiving a new box of handpicked clothing. It’s been a while since my last box, but my stylist nailed my picks. I ended up keeping a cute pair of pants! To see everything I received, you can check out my review here.
What I’m Loving
Five Tribes – As I mentioned last month, Jay is hunting down all the best board games for us to play. Five Tribes is a new one he recently purchased and it’s another hit! It reminds me a bit of Mancala, but more complicated. Plus, it’s great for two people which is a bonus for us.
Yankee Candle Car Jar Ultimates – A few months ago I found a few fall scented Car Jar Ultimates at a Yankee Candle outlet store. I’m surprised at how long they actually last! It was two months before I replaced the first one. Great idea if you’re looking for small gifts! If you’re looking for a deal on regular size candles, you can get 15% off Village Candles with the code 15CANDLES for a limited time!
Baking Supplies – I received a number of baking tools as wedding gifts, so I finally put them to use. I tried out a double layer chocolate cake with peanut butter icing and chocolate ganache. Holy wow. So good and so much fun!!
Bigelow Vanilla Caramel Tea – I’m drinking this practically every day at work. It’s a great cool weather tea. Sweet and rich and comforting.

Five Tribes sounds fun. I have been looking for a game for two players too.
Some of our other two player favorites are 7 Wonders Duel and Splendor.
I’m definitely loving all things pumpkin — and thanks for the tea recommendation. This is the time of year to breathe in the steam and enjoy the feeling of a warm mug in our hands.
Hey Rachel … i do love a visit to a zoo … and a piece of that cake with a cup of tea would be perfect for aftewards. so fun to bump into you over at Leigh’s today!
That is my favorite flavor of tea! I love when my tea tastes exactly like a dessert. Such a fall-ish flavor, too!
Wow that cake looks amazing! Well done! I love the idea of trying out good board games too 🙂
As the mom of two teen girls, Mean Girls is one of our favorite things to watch around here! Frightening close to real life but also really good for a laugh 🙂
I’ve never played Five Tribes before–I should give it a try next time we visit a board game cafe. Your cake looks amazing!
