Reading RoundUp #19
Now that we’re through a busy two months of vacations, activities, house-hunting, and book sales, I’m finally focusing on reading again! Plus, the time change is making me want to stay curled up on the couch every night after 6pm. It’s miserable going back outside once it’s dark! Luckily, Thanksgiving is only a week away and after that I can put up Christmas decorations!!!!
This week’s Reading Roundup!
Work Book (for lunch time reading):
Mischling by Affinity Konar – I was immediately hooked when I heard the plot summary: two twins who survive the horrors of Nazi Josef Mengele’s twisted medical research camp and are separated after the war. However, when I started actually reading it I couldn’t get into the story. The writing is lyrical and “beautiful” (as some would say), which to me means there isn’t a whole lot of story / action. I’m now just skimming through to find out the ending.
Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld – Another book I was highly anticipating – a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice. It’s entertaining, but essentially it’s the same exact story / sentences with present day replacements (cross-fit, texting, country clubs, etc).
Apartment Books:
A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin – After a healthy break since finishing the first book, I’m ready to dive back in to this series. I know what happens, but that doesn’t make these epic stories any less fun to read.
The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman – Another book I’ve already read, but sometimes I need to know I’m going to love a book before I dive in. This is an excellent story about a couple who live on an island and decide to keep a baby that washes up one day alive. It brings up questions about the consequences of your actions and what truly is the right solution. Fun fact – the movie version was released in September!
Kindle Books:
Paris For One by JoJo Moyes – I downloaded this on a whim to keep me busy during an oil change ha. It’s a collection of shorter stories and it’s as delightful as expected so far : )
From Around the Web:
Gilmore Girls Book Recap – In honor of the upcoming Gilmore Girls 4-part series, Modern Mrs Darcy put together a wonderful recap of some of the key books / episodes from the original 7 seasons!
Top Gear vs The Great British Bake Off – Fun comparison about the potential success of two of my favorite former BBC shows.
New Experiences Through AirBnB – A new initiative from this home rental company expands their offerings to local experiences and recommendations.
What are you most looking forward to eating for Thanksgiving?
*Disclosure – I earn a small commission if you purchase any items through the links above. Thanks for supporting my reading habit!
Have you seen the film adaptation of The Light Between Oceans yet? I read the book a few months ago and have been wanting to watch the movie!
No I haven’t, but I really want to! I think Michael Fassbender is a great actor.
I also enjoyed The Light Between Two Oceans, Eligible, and Paris for One, all enjoyable for their own reasons!
