Book Buys – May 2017

Earlier this month a coworker told me about a local library sale just a few miles from our office. We spent a Friday lunch hour browsing the rows and rows of used books! I was thrilled with the selection and ended up with 8 books for $12. Here’s what I bought:

Me Before You by JoJo Moyes – I’m a fan of her in general, but I have a particular soft spot for this title since it was the first I read by her.

A Separate Peace by John Knowles – Admittedly, I don’t remember where or why I’ve heard of this book, but it caught my attention as I was browsing. It follows two boys at an American boarding school during WWII.

The Monument’s Men by Robert M Edsel – Both the book and the movie are worth your time, especially if you have any interest in art or WWII. This is the true story of the men that struggled to save monuments, artifacts, and art from destruction or falling into Nazi hands.

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier – I just read this for the first time a few months ago and fell in love with her Gothic storytelling style. It’s a slightly haunting tale of a newlywed couple and the lingering influence of the husband’s dead former wife.

Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley – Although not written by Margaret Mitchell, Ripley does a wonderful job following in her footsteps. It’s probably been ten years since I last read either Gone With the Wind or the sequel, so I’m looking forward to picking them up again soon.

Rules of Civility by Amor Towles – Towles’ more famous novel is A Gentlemen in Moscow, but this story about a young woman in 1930’s New York who unexpectedly finds herself as part of high society seems more intriguing.

The Taming of the Queen by Philippa Gregory – I have had a soft spot for Philippa Gregory ever since reading The Other Boleyn Girl. This is another Henry VIII tale, but this time about his sixth wife, Kateryn Parr.

The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan – Since I’m a Degas fan, this novel about a ballet dancer he painted has been on my TBR list for a while. I was thrilled to find it at the book sale!
