Reading RoundUp #29
What weird weather we’ve had for the end of August / beginning of September. Lots of storms and chilly weather this week means lots of reading time! After a busy but wonderful Labor Day weekend hosting family, I always welcome a week with nothing on the calendar. Here’s what I’m reading currently!
This week’s Reading Roundup!
Work Book (for lunch time reading):
The Pemberley Chronicles by Rebecca Ann Collins – Billed as a complementary novel to Pride and Prejudice, the Pemberley Chronicles picks up the story right after Elizabeth and Jane’s wedding. As much as I love these characters, I’m finding this book sickeningly sweet. The two women constantly rave about their amazing husbands and perfect life. None of the flaws and conflicts that made the original worth reading are present here.
House Books:
A Separate Peace by John Knowles – After about a month of reading, I finally finished this book. The plot is fairly slow moving, which typically makes me reluctant to keep reading. At least it is a different perspective about how World War II influenced American lives.
Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery – From the author of Anne of Green Gables comes another unique tale about a young orphan. One of my favorite book bloggers, Modern Mrs Darcy, consistently recommends this title. I’m only a few chapters in, but I can tell I’m going to love this character and all her adventures.
From Around the Web:
10 Signs You Use Goodreads – Did anyone else realize Goodreads has their own blog? There are some great posts on here!
British Food Souvenirs – Next time we hop over the pond I’m keeping an eye out for most of these! The only one I brought home from my last trip to London was Cadbury chocolate (of course).
DIY Outdoor Decor Projects for Fall – For those who are more crafty than I am, some of these ideas are adorable and seem fairly easy! Mom! (I hope you’re reading) I want you to make me some of these 🙂
*Disclosure – I earn a small commission if you purchase any items through the links above. Thanks for supporting my reading habit!
Bummer that the Pemberley Chronicles doesn’t live up to the original!!! I loved Emily of New Moon as a child and I am re-reading it this fall for the MMD book club. It also used to be on TV when I was a tween and I was obsessed. If you like L.M. Montgomery in general, the Blue Castle is another of hers (not in a series) that I quite enjoyed.
I would love to find that show. Thanks for the Blue Castle suggestion – I haven’t heard of it, so I will check it out!
Galaxy is better than Cadburys. Just saying 😉
I will certainly have to try that next visit then!!
I read A Separate Peace back in high school and really liked it – I might need to re-read it soon.
A Separate Peace is one of my favorite novels from growing up.
I love the name of your blog, not sure if I’ve said that before.
Thank you!! You might be the first person to comment on the name, so you made my day : )
The Pemberley Chronicles doesn’t really sound very good lol but I am a sucker for anything P&P related.
I love the idea of seeing Elizabeth and Jane after their weddings but I cannot imagine Elizabeth going on and on about how perfect Mr. Darcy is. I always imagined they would continue to challenge one another with utmost respect and love. 😀
I 100% agree. That’s the expectation I had going in, but it certainly isn’t the reality. Admittedly, I’m still going to finish it though haha.
I have been learning that Pride and Prejudice type novels have quite a following! I read the book a few years ago, but didn’t capture me. However I am interested in the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book, it sounds interesting.
I’ve actually heard quite good things about both that book and the movie. Hopefully you can give them a shot.
A Separate Peace and The Outsiders are two books I read as a teenager that I still adore.
First, I LOVE that you have “Work books” and “House books” I think that’s freaken brilliant!! 🙂 I read so much to have a book somewhere, everywhere, so that you can always be reading but I love the idea of work books and house books haha!! And I had no idea that Goodreads has a blog! I’m going to check it out now!
Hahaha thank you so much!! Saves effort carting a book back and forth each day : )
Oh I need to read Emily of the New Moon! It sounds great!
I’m almost finished now and I just adore it. Highly recommend!
I love how you are categorizing your books. I remember reading A Separate Peace in middle school and I did not get into it. I’m not sure if it would be different now or not… ? I looove Anne of Green Gables, I need to keep going! 🙂 Here from SUYB! XO – Alexandra

Definitely weird weather here in Iowa too. We didn’t have any 90 degree days in August, but the next 3 days here will be!
I loved that glass table/water wall idea on the DIY page!
I will have to checkout the goodreads blog too!
