What Is Kindle Unlimited?
Kindle Unlimited is a digital subscription that gives you access to over 4 million eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines for a small monthly fee.
When you search the Kindle store on Amazon, you can select the Kindle Unlimited filter to see which books are included. Although I’m primarily a romance reader, there are books from every genre available! So, you’ll find something to devour whether it’s romance, thrillers, memoirs, or history books.
The selection does change, so you can browse frequently to find new options. Plus, in many cases, if you find an author you love, it’s likely that at least a few of their other books are included as well!
Along the same lines, in my personal experience I’ve found that whole series are included. So when I start something new, I can keep reading the next book right away!
How Much Does Kindle Unlimited Cost?
Right now – it’s FREE!! But I know you’re interested in how much you’ll have to pay after this deal.
The regular price is $11.99 / month. You can cancel at anytime (and the process is very simple) which is one of the reasons I use it.
At this time, there is no extra savings for purchasing a longer term subscription, so the month to month plan is the only option.
What Is Included in Kindle Unlimited?
The possibilities are seemingly endless with this subscription. Not only do you get access to books, thousands of audiobooks and magazine subscriptions are automatically included as well!
I’ll admit I like having access to People, HGTV, Good Housekeeping and Real Simple magazines!
What Are The Best Books To Read?
As a primarily romance book blogger, I have very strong opinions about my favorite authors currently included! I rounded up a sizable list of my top picks in the romance genre. So, make sure you check out my list of the Best Kindle Unlimited Romance Books!
For those who want a bit more variety, here are some other options that I personally read and loved or heard great things about from fellow readers!
- Thriller – A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
- Thriller – The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose
- Fantasy – The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
- Historical Fiction – In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen
- Historical Fiction – Beyond That, The Sea by Laura Spence-Ash
What Do Other Readers Think: The Good & Bad
I polled a few fellow readers to find out what they think of Kindle Unlimited if they’re current subscribers or have used it in the past. Here are a few of their responses, to show some of the positives and negatives of the service!
“I love it. I participate in an online book club and often the book selected is on KU”
“I only use it during free trials or the $0.99 deals. Not worth it.”
“I love it! My TBR doesn’t though because there are so many good books to read.”
“Yes! I read 12-20 books / month. I don’t have that kind of money to invest in physical copies!”
“Honestly it depends what you read. It’s not for me but I can see the benefits”
As you can see, the opinions are mixed! My biggest takeaway from polling my followers is that it can be extremely beneficial if you use it the right way. Also, many recommended taking advantage of deals (like the one going on now for FREE) when you can!
Is Kindle Unlimited Worth It For Me?
The answer to this question lies heavily in the quantity of books you read each month and the genres you prefer. While there are books from every genre, romance and mystery/thriller are heavily represented both in quality authors and quantity of choices.
If you prefer to pick up the latest bestselling literary fiction novel or a celebrity memoir, Kindle Unlimited may not be the right choice.
In addition, at $11.99 / month this subscription is only valuable if you read 2+ books per month. Otherwise, in almost every case it would be $10 or less to buy an individual eBook each month.
The savings really come if you read 2 or more books each month! Based on normal eBook prices, you’ll already start saving with the second book you read.
With all that in mind, hopefully you can decide Is Kindle Unlimited Worth It based on your own reading speed and preferences!
Personally, I use it on and off! I purchase it for a stretch of a few months and then cancel it when I need a break or have other books I’d rather read in my house. Then, when I’m ready to dive back into a new romance series or find a new author I love, I’ll subscribe again.
The ease with which you can cancel or resubscribe makes it incredibly simple to use. With all of these factors in mind, it’s a no brainer for me a few months out of the year!

Sometimes during Prime Day amazon deeply discounts KU subscriptions and it is definitely
worth it to subscribe at that time. Makes KU a no brainer. I have 2 years left on my membership before it renews
