What I’m Loving Lately – August 2019
I’m back with my regular monthly updates! I experimented with skipping them all together, but I enjoy recapping my month so here we are again 🙂 Our last month of summer was full of relaxing weekends at home and a few fun outings. Next up we have two vacations to look forward to in September! First up we’re heading to Williamsburg VA for a long weekend then it’s down to Florida to visit Jay’s grandmother.
Head over to See You In A Porridge on Thursday for more monthly recaps from other bloggers.

TV Shows
Four Weddings and a Funeral – This TV show loosely based on the movie is available on Hulu. I’ve actually never seen the movie (shocking, since I adore Hugh Grant), but the TV show is stellar. It’s a drama about a few American friends who now live in England. I’ve both laughed out loud at parts and sobbed through the unexpectedly emotional funeral. I’m trying my hardest not to watch all the episodes too fast so I can savor it a bit longer.
Stranger Things – I just recently finished reading Stephen King’s new release, The Institute and I’ve heard it’s comparable to Stranger Things. So, I finally bit the bullet and signed up for a free month of Netflix. The first three episodes were decent, but I’m hoping it gets better soon or I’ll start wondering why everyone loves it so much? In the meantime, preorder The Institute because it has jumped into my Top 5 Stephen King books.
The Great British Baking Show – An obvious must-watch for me (and the real reason I signed up for Netflix again)! These episodes will be released week by week, so it’ll be fun to have a new challenge to look forward to each week.
Movies
Guardians of the Galaxy – Still probably my favorite Marvel movie. I just love the humor and unique characters in this one and can happily watch it over and over again. This was also one of the very few movies I’ve seen more than once in theaters. Now we don’t see any movies in theaters because… baby haha.
Books
Check out my latest reading roundup of book recommendations here! I’m currently reading:
Events/Activities
Solo Day Hiking – I have a bunch of vacation days to use this year, so I decided to take a random Monday off. With Connor at daycare and Jay at work, I had eight hours all to myself! It was gorgeous outside, so I spent part of the day hiking at a local park.
Cupcake Decorating Class – A few friends and I took a class at a local bakery for my 30th birthday! The instructor was amazing and taught us a bunch of piping tips and techniques. We’re thinking of doing another one around Christmas since we had so much fun.
Cats Musical – My parents got us tickets to see Cats for last year’s Christmas present and the date finally arrived! We saw the touring Broadway production at the Hershey Theater. The cast was stellar and all the dancing and singing were very well done. It was my first time seeing the show and I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed it!
Birthday Dinner – Jay and I left Connor with his mom for a rare date night to celebrate my birthday. We went to a local Irish restaurant that has the most amazing lamb stew. I also tried their own Irish creme, but I’ll have to admit I still like my beloved Bailey’s better 🙂
What I’m Loving
Snack Package – I came across this box of snacks on Prime Day and couldn’t resist trying it out. They have a few collections of individually sized popular snacks. It would be a great care package to send to a college student. We just eat it ourselves and don’t have to worry about wasting a regular size bag of chips or popcorn.
Flexible Ice Packs – In a freak circumstance, I got stung by a bee WHILE RUNNING!! I didn’t know that was even possible, but believe me it is! My entire foot swelled up and itched like mad for 5 days. The only relief was ice, so I bought these flexible ice packs to wrap around my entire foot.
Scribd – I’m a few months into my Scribd renewal and still loving it. You can try it for free for two months with my link if you’re interested. Plus, at $9/month it’s cheaper than an Audible subscription and gives you access to unlimited ebooks and audiobooks. The selection of new releases is impressive, so I always check this app before even trying my library.
What were your highlights of August?
Here’s what I was loving in June!
I grew up tap dancing on the stage of the Hershey Theatre! I love that building!
NO way! That’s neat. I’m sure those are cherished memories.
I remember seeing the trailers for four weddings and a funeral but I didn’t have high hopes because the movie was so good. But now I think you’ve convinced me! I’ll have to check it out. You really should watch the movie too!
I LOVE that you took a day off to do a solo hike. I’m a big fan of self-care!
Those cupcakes look amazing! Nice job!
But ouch! Your poor foot. I can’t believe that lasted 5 days. That sounds so painful and uncomfortable. I’m so scared of bees. I’ve never been stung by one so my anticipatory anxiety about being stung has built up for 40 years!
I loved your post! Sounds like you had a great month! I don’t know what I did in August besides going to NH and Maine. The rest of the month was probably work-home-tv-sleep-rinse & repeat.♀️
I will definitely add the movie to my list! I hadn’t been stung since I was a kid, so there was major panic about a more severe allergic reaction. Thankfully nothing too serious! Hopefully you fit in something quirky and fun in September 🙂
I’ve never seen the film of Four Weddings and a Funeral either.
Your cupcakes look amazing!
Guardians of the Galaxy is a gem! I love it! Have a wonderful September!
i’ve seen the movie of Four Weddings and a Funeral years and years and years ago, good to know the tv show is good, totally adding it to my list.
wait. stop. hold the phone. there are new bake off episodes?! is this real life? I know what I am doing tonight!!
Yes there are!! And we’re actually seeing the current season airing in Britain. I think it’s just a week behind or something? Netflix is releasing a new episode every Friday…
I loved Cats when I saw it too! I’m curious to see what they do with the movie version this December. Guardian of the Galaxy was one of my fave “superhero” movies- I especially loved the soundtrack. Cake decorating is such a fun birthday idea- glad you had fun, and they turned out really well!
Your cupcakes look amazing!
Love the hike photo also.
I adore Hugh Grant but honestly don’t think I’ve seen that movie! Will have to change that.
Those cupcakes look amazing – what a fun way to celebrate your birthday.
Bee stings are not fun! I got stung once and it was quite painful!
Glad it isn’t just me missing out!
