What I’m Loving Lately – May 2018

We just got back from a quick minibreak in Charleston, SC and enjoyed the extra day off work for Memorial Day. With our Ireland trip coming up in June, there’s lots of activity in the Kamery household! Check out Leigh Kramer’s linkup to see what other bloggers are into this month too!

TV Shows

Friday Night Lights – While I’m waiting for Younger Season 5, I’m looking for a new show to fill the void. I watched the first few episodes of this one, but I’m not sure I’ll stick with it. Any other suggestions??

King of QueensAfter taking a break from some of the HBO shows, we switched back to an old favorite.

Movies

Avengers: Infinity Wars – Admittedly, I didn’t have the highest hopes for this one. I didn’t think they’d be able to pull all the superheros together in a way that made any sort of sense. Well, I was wrong. Centering the story around Thanos was key. High entertainment value and lots of laughs made this a success in my book.

DunkirkI’m not sure how I feel about this harrowing depiction of the evacuation of Dunkirk in WWII. I didn’t know any of the backstory, so I was expecting a typical battle heavy movie. Instead, this is a focused piece on the experience of a few different men involved in the evacuation. There’s not much dialogue, but you are drawn into the emotions of these characters. It’s certainly unique…

Tour de Pharmacy – The mockumentaries continue!! This is now the fourth Andy Samberg parody we’ve watched and they continue to make us laugh!

The Return of the KingI convinced Jay to watch this one night when we couldn’t agree on anything else. I’m eager to finish out this trilogy since I finished reading the books a few weeks ago.

Books

Check out my latest reading roundup post here! I’m currently reading:

Events/Activities

Mothers Day Wine WalkI went home for Mother’s Day weekend to join my mom on a wine walk in Mechanicsburg. All the downtown shops opened their doors and featured wine samples and snacks. We had a terrific time browsing and enjoying the drinks!

Bon Jovi Concert – My work raffled off free tickets to see Bon Jovi and I won! He still sounded amazing and thankfully sang all of his hits.

Family BBQ/Birthday Party – My in-laws came to visit one Saturday for a surprise birthday / bbq for Jay’s uncle. Unfortunately, it rained all day, but we still enjoyed hosting and catching up with everyone. Plus, I had an excuse to test cake and icing recipes and play with my decorating tools!

Turkey Hill Ice Cream Social I’m a member of the online Turkey Hill Nation group (basically because I want free ice cream). Well, I applied for their ambassador team to promote the new Decadent Delights line and got in! They sent me free coupons, an ice cream scoop, and a T-shirt!! Our bible study kindly agreed to test out the new products and we all loved them. Thanks Turkey Hill! Fan for life over here.

Charleston, SC – At the end of May, I joined Jay on his quick business trip to Charleston. We spent two days in and around the city. Here’s our itinerary. Keep an eye out for a trip report soon!

What I’m Loving

Garden Seeds – I planted tomato and pepper seeds on Easter…and waited and waited for them to grow. Three weeks later nothing happened so I threw them out and planted new ones. In less than two weeks all my tomato seeds sprouted!! My peppers took a little longer, but they’re popping up too. Hoping to get them into my garden soon.

ScribdI cannot profess my love of Scribd loudly enough. I got a 3 month bonus trial as part of an ebook bundle and it’s been phenomenal. I’m actually listening to audiobooks! My library just can’t compete with their selection, especially for newer books. I’m actually considering keeping it… If you want to try it out, you can use my link to get two months free!

Balega Athletic Socks – A friend introduced me to these after I admired her pair. They’re ridiculously comfortable and hold up well even through many loads of laundry.

What were you loving in May?

  1. Stick with Friday Night Lights. The first season is one of my favorite first seasons of all time, followed closely by Veronica Mars and Prison Break! Coach Taylor, Tami, and Tim Riggins are 3 of the best characters to ever be created! We’re still working our way through Hart of Dixie and we love it.

Since moving to Florida the only thing my bf misses from PA is Turkey Hill iced tea! Every time we have family coming to visit he asks if they can slide some iced tea in their bag. (No one has yet, but my dad did overnight us Chocolate World chocolate chip cookies once!!)

    1. Ah I’m a sucker for Prison Break too! That’s hilarious that your bf always asks for iced tea!! It is absolutely delicious. The Chocolate World cookies were a huge part of my childhood as well. I grew up 20 minutes from Hershey, so we often visited Chocolate World just to go on the ride and get cookies afterward.

  2. Oooh, I had similar feelings about Dunkirk. Everyone I spoke with reeeeally loved it. I thought it was emotional and powerful but not… the best war film ever? Idk. I wanted to like it as much as they all did, but I just didn’t.

Hmm, TV shows. Have you ever worked in retail? My hubby and I both had stints in retail, and we’re finding the 20min. comedy Superstore to be HILARIOUS. But I don’t think it’d appeal if you a.) Aren’t a comedy person; or b.) haven’t worked in a retail store. Whatever you end up with, I hope you love it!

    1. So glad to hear I’m not alone with that movie! I’ll check out Superstore – I did have a retail job in high school so I’m sure I would relate to some of the jokes : ) Thanks for the suggestion!

    1. I just planted a lilac bush this year so I’m hoping it doesn’t take too long to grow. I love the smell of lilacs too.

  3. I am still traumatized by Thanos in The Avengers Infinity War. They pulled off the storyline very well though; too well if you ask me. I was not expecting such an emotional reaction to a Marvel movie. I can not wait for Part 4 to make me whole again. 🙂

  4. A wine walk sounds awesome! I defintely want to get my hands on the Friedrick Bachman (def butchered that) novel too. I loved his previous titles!

  5. Fun post! I actually really liked Dunkirk – I knew it wasn’t dialogue heavy going in which is probably a good thing or I’d be confused. haha I still need to see the new Avengers, but I’m glad to hear you liked it and thought it worked. 🙂

    1. I agree, having the right expectations going into Dunkirk would make a big difference. Glad you liked it!

  6. So glad you enjoyed the Bon Jovi concert! I’ve been a lifelong fan and it always makes me happy when others enjoy themselves at Bon Jovi concerts. Even though Jon’s voice has changed over the past 30 years and he cannot hit the high notes like he used to, I think he still sounds great. I will admit that I’ve only seen them once since Richie Sambora’s departure (after having seen them 12 times before Richie left) and I do miss Richie and Jon’s stage chemistry.

  7. Love the wine walk for Mother’s Day, sounds fabulous!! Winning tickets to concerts is my fav way to go, free is always nice. Congrats on getting your seeds to sprout, it’s always such an exciting to see something you planted grow and be able to enjoy.

  8. return of the king is my fave 🙂

i have never watched friday night lights, but i’ve heard nothing but good things. i’m sure i’ll watch it one day when i am in the mood for a binge, so do share if you continue. my favourite show is miss fisher’s murder mysteries. i’m watching downton abbey at the moment, i watched it years ago but never finished the last season so i’m rewatching it all and hopefully going to finish it before the end of the year haha. i am not much of a tv watcher most of the time.

oh my gosh, i need all that ice cream. yum.

    1. Oh Downton Abbey! I miss that show dearly. I had so much fun watching each season with my friends. We were OBSESSED!

  9. Ireland! Fabulous. We were there in 2016, it’s the first time I’d been there in over 10 years. Are you going all over?

    1. Yes, I planned quite the itinerary. We’re starting in Dublin then driving through most of the country with a few stops along the way. We’re also heading up to Northern Ireland and doing a day trip to the Scottish Isle of Islay! If you’re curious, my whole itinerary is here!

  10. Ireland, that’s so exciting! My family is Irish, so I hope to make it there someday.
I thought that Avengers: Infinity War came together really well. I wasn’t sure how they’d bring everyone together, but I really enjoyed it. That ending though! Ahhh!
